Oh, and I almost forgot, if a scene comes into your head that isn't the beginning, write it down. There is no law that says you have to write it down in chronological order.

I sometimes listen to music that reminds me of the general feel of the story I want to write. Then I do my brainstorming either in my head or on paper, and get the beginning of the general plotline, the idea of the main characters. Sometimes a song will inspire a character or twist in the plot, but this shouldhelp you to start.

Start from your own experiences. Never think these are boring or insignificant-they are fascinating to others and provide credible experiences for the reader simply because they come from real life. Never throw away anything you have written. They may not be appropriate for your current project but may be useful for future ones.

Of course, you'll need the idea first but maybe reading the article will help with that too.

If you are a fiction writer. Take time to visit the online book sellers [B&N or BAM] and review their top 100 best sellers. Thee you can get an idea of what the market is attract to and maybe it will spark an idea.
