Book Description | Author's Comment

My book is a simple autobiography of an African American female in a Southern rural town in Arkansas. It is simple because my intent is to tell my story from a personal point of view, with neither research, nor statistics, nor quotations. It is a straight narrative, written from my memory, and an oral history of those who helped jog my memory.
The story of Kathlean, Noot, and Pearlie plays out in six chapters. Each chapter covers a specific developmental stage in my life. Each period covers the social milieu, economics, and lifestyle of my immediate family. The reasons are twofold; (a) to provide a concise picture of the world of the key players in this story, and the resulting challenges; and (b) to reveal the process of trying to break the shackles of poverty. The incidents in the lives of these three women demonstrate that successfully breaking out of the bonds of poverty is not merely a matter of deciding not to be poor.
